Palace found life difficult back in the first division during the 1998 – 1999 season as they could only manage a finish in 14th position. The following three years saw palace only being able to finish off towards the bottom end of the table as they were far from convincing back in the first division. They did enjoy a fine run of winning seven consecutive matches during the 2001 – 2002 season, however in different form the rest of the campaign only resulted in a very disappointing 10th position finish.
The eagles reached the third round of the FA cup during the 1999 – 200 season however suffered defeat against Cambridge United, however, the 2000 – 2001 season saw Palace edge close to the League cup final as they reached the semi finals of the competition, only suffering defeat against eventual ‘treble’ winners, Liverpool in the last four.
The Eagles crashed out of the league cup and FA cup in the third round during there 2001 – 2002 season suffering defeats against Sheffield Wednesday and Newcastle United respectively.
Douggie Freedman and Clinton Morrison established a fine partnership up front for Crystal Palace during this time period.
